Great awareness day
One day after the announcement of the outcome of the shire amalgamation the mountain residents celebrated our natural environment at Landcare's Community Awareness Day. The wide range of activities attracted many more people than expected.
The live quoll was an eye opener for many people who had never seen one before. Quolls still live on the mountain, even though the numbers are very limited. The TM NHA and Landcare consider setting up a quoll survey program. The announcements of the winner of the Tiles for Trees competition and the 24 winners of the photo competition were well attended as well. Dep. Mayor Cr. Vanessa Bull expressed her appreciation for the activities of Landcare, both on ground as in for instance these competitions. The 'Tree of all ages', a sculpture design by Bec and Thor Andersen won the $ 5,000 prize. It will finally be built in Main Street. Carla Chesters submitted only one picture to the My Backyard Critters Photo Competition, but that happened to be the overall winner! The organisation of the competition was overwhelmed by over 850 submitted pictures; it emphasizes the appreciation of the community for wildlife in our own backyards. The 24 winning photo's are on display at the Library North Tamborine till 24 August.
The Traditional owners of the Koombemerri people, the Border Ranges committee, Landcare, the Quoll Network, the TM NHA, Bushcare services and Margie Row's puppet theatre all contributed to a very nice atmosphere at the morning market.
Landcare also provided information about 'Green Domain' its new support program for private landholders. About 40 people asked for information about this program. Also the Green Domain field workshops / guided walks in the afternoon attracted many more people than Landcare expected. Each of the three walks was attended by 30 - 40 people. Numala opened its doors to explain the Nature Refuge project. The visitors to the 'former avocado orchard' West Road learned about successes and failures of revegetation, while the Botanical Gardens team of Landcare showed the results of 18 months of well organised regeneration. A plaque was unveiled by Cr. Vanessa Bull marking the end of the first stage of the project: over 2 hectares of weeding and planting. This project is a great example of the result of successful co-operation of many people and organisations. The Garden Club and TM Landcare overcame their different views on gardening and revegetation, starting up this project. The on ground teams of both organisations co-operated very well, and a team of Landcare volunteers adopted the project as their own, putting many hundreds of volunteer hours into it. SEQ-C was the major contributor in the financial sense, and the Council supported with a grant for plants as well. CVA- and GreenCorps teams put over eight full weeks of work in the project, even providing several teams for free. The co-ordination by the Taskforce Green Infrastructure Tamborine Mountain, including QPWS (National parks) is helpful as well, because this project basically forms the Wildlife Corridor connecting MacDonnall National park and the Escarpment. Several local residents whose properties border this corridor have expressed interest in adjusting their land to the wildlife corridor features as well, using Green Domain.
Landcare thanks everyone contributing to, and attending the Community Awareness Day 2007.
More information about Green Domain will be provided each third Saturday of the month 10am - 12noon at the Piccabeen Bookshop (phone 55451847), Main Street, North Tamborine. Field workshops for private landholders will be organised every second month. Landcare's website will give the details.
