Koalas are listed as "vulnerable to extinction" in South East Queensland. Koalas are resident all over the Scenic Rim. Yet they are rarely seen.
Scenic Rim Regional Council is seeking to gather data from residents on the distribution of local Koalas. Sightings from your own property, roadside vegetation, Reserves/National Parks or neighbouring property (only if they are agreeable) can be made. Dead Koalas can be reported too.
Adult Koalas are territorial and a colony will consist of a number of both males and females, each in their own territory that overlaps slightly with their neighbours. The density is usually 1 Koala per 3 Hectares (or more) – so they are usually well spread-out.
Young Koalas disperse to new areas. Adult males make a distinctive bellow in the mating season and a call record can be submitted even if no visual sighting was made.
You can also check your property for signs of Koalas – fresh faecal pellets, claw marks on trees, or sometimes a distinct odour. Note – this data will be made available to the EPA for their Wildnet Database.
