Tiles for Trees started up over two years ago, as a unique environmental/cultural project for Tamborine Mountain. An art work will be established consisting of 11,000 ceramic tiles. 1,000 of those tiles will be painted by local school children, 10,000 will be sold to residents and tourists. 50% of the turn over will be used for artists, overhead and the technical creation, 50% for Landcare’s Corridor Regeneration Project. A call for designs in 2005 lead to 19 designs. A local judging panel selected five designs. A public vote, after display of the designs at the library, added another one, thus making 6 finalists. They were rewarded a $ 500 prize each in June 2006. In between they have refined their submissions and on 11 July a high profile Jury will select the winner, to be announced on 28 July 2007 11 am at the Library at a community awareness day of Landcare. The winner will receive a checque of $ 5,000. The costs so far, including $ 8,000 prize money have been collected by Landcare’s Tiles for Trees committee. The funds were donated by the Council, by a few generous residents, by the members of the Chamber of Commerce (at the Christmas party 2005) and by governmental funding in exchange for a study on the impact of night spotting walks on the mountain. No Landcare funds have been used at all, neither from Landcare grants, nor from donations or own (e.g. Piccabeen) funds. Tiles for Trees is a Queensland first, a very ambitious, unique project that requires a lot of networking, support and courage. After the final selection of a design the Tiles for Trees committee will be re-established. The committee will focus on the establishment of a suitable venue (with man/woman-power) for sales and creation of the tiles at Gallery Walk. Landcare will not reject offers for active support. If you like arts and environment and want to give a bit of your skills and time to the community, than this is your chance!
